Gary Trey, MD

Dr. Gary Trey is an experienced, Board-certified GI and liver specialist with Prima CARE Gastroenterology.  Dr. Trey is a native of Massachusetts and has provided decades of expert medical care to his patients in the Boston area.

Dr. Trey is a graduate of Vassar College.  He earned his Doctorate in Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine and a Master’s Degree in Public Health at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.  He completed his Internal Medicine Internship at Hartford Hospital and his Internal Medicine Residency at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.  He then completed his Fellowship in Gastroenterology and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital (Tufts).

Dr. Trey conducted medical research in South Africa before assuming an academic appointment in Transplant Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, followed by academic appointments at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Harvard Medical School), and Tufts Medical School.  His medical practice focused on Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Hepatology (liver disease) for over 20 years in Boston.  Dr. Trey is skilled at the diagnosis and management of a variety of intestinal and liver disorders and performs diagnostic endoscopic procedures. 

Dr. Trey is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in the specialties of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Transplant Hepatology.  He has given many presentations to the local medical community and has contributed articles and book chapters to the medical literature.  He has been a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease and the American Gastroenterological Association, serving on the Medical Advisory Board of the Americal Liver Foundation. 

Dr. Trey sees outpatient referrals in his Gastroenterology office on the main Prima CARE campus, performs endoscopic procedures in Prima CARE’s GI Endoscopy Suite, and provides inpatient care to hospitalized patients at Saint Anne’s Hospital (a part of Brown University Health).  He accepts nearly all insurances and is accepting new referrals.  Dr. Trey is supported by the extensive laboratory and imaging services at Prima CARE and by the wide variety of other Prima CARE specialists.
